WEATHER ALERT! MOUNT RAINIER RESIDENTS

In preparation for Tropical Storm Isaias, ALL CITY STAFF with the exception of Public Works and Police Officers will telework on Tuesday, August 4th. City Buildings will be CLOSED tomorrow.

This evening, Prince George's County held a conference call for Municipalities. On this call, a representative from the National Weather Service indicated that Prince George's County is in the direct path of Tropical Storm Isaias.

We are expected to have flooding, high winds, and wind damage. Isaias is being compared to Irene (hurricane from nine years ago).

With that being said as a safety precaution we will telework and only have essential employees report.

If your electric power is interrupted, be sure to report the outage to PEPCO right away. You may also Check My Outage Status or View Outage Map. You can report your electric outage online, including on your smartphone or tablet. If you prefer, call us 24/7 at 1-877-737-2662.

If power lines are down, always assume downed power lines are energized and stay away. To report a downed wire, call 1-877-737-2662.

If at all possible do not use candles.

If you encounter high water or standing water -- TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN!

Mayors Have the Right to ACT on Behalf of THEIR RESIDENTS

Keisha Lance Bottoms, Mayor of Atlanta, a member of DeltaSigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a Black woman, and a mayor is currently being sued by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to pre-empt her city-wide mandate on wearing masks. This past Thursday, the Governor filed an injunction motion to prevent Mayor Bottoms from speaking to the press regarding this matter.

I am asking the Maryland Mayors to stand with Mayor Bottoms and support her as she defends these legal maneuvering.

Let's make this social media campaign: “I oppose Governor Kemp’s lawsuit and motion to silence Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms from keeping the people of Atlanta safe. We call upon Fulton County Superior Court to decide that Mayor Bottoms is being singled out amongst other mayors in Georgia with similar mandates and deny the Governor’s request.” Governor Kemp, Fulton County Superior Court and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms all have social media pages on FB, IG, and Twitter. We ask that you tag all three when posting.

Please copy and post on all of your social media NOW!

COVID-19 Renal Assistance Program and MORE!

Many of Mount Rainier residents are living in fear and quandary over their rent and their homes once the pandemic crisis is lifted.

There are no real solutions out there, I for one, truly believe that there will be a day of reckoning, and residents will feel the burnt of some of the decisions that have been made.

However, starting May 11, 2020, there will be some programs opened and made available to help with some of the rental crisis t in our community. Be prepared to go after the funding. Be ready to push to get help. Do not let anything get in your way of seeking the help you need to retain your housing. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL MONDAY, MAY 11, 2020, to get your documentation together.

COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance

The ERA Partner Agency will assess the applicant’s documentation to determine eligibility. If applicant is only seeking utility bill assistance, all the above documentation may not be needed.

OTHER PROGRAMS THAT MAY HELP YOU GET THROUGH THIS!

Rental Assistance Services

There is an array of rental assistance services offered to County residents through the Prince George's County Housing Authority. Participants for most of these programs must come off of the existing Housing Choice Voucher Wait List. The Housing Authority operates the Housing Choice Voucher Program (also referred to as Section 8). Currently, the waiting list for Section 8 is closed. Once the waiting list re-opens, it will be advertised in the local media, newspapers and libraries.

These programs include:

Housing Choice Voucher Program - Enables low-income families to rent an apartment, condominium, townhouse, or single-family unit in Prince George's County.

The Housing Choice Voucher Homeownership Program (HCVHP) - Uses a voucher subsidy that once helped families pay rent to a landlord but can now help first-time homeowners to purchase their own home.

Family Unification Program - Is a partnership with the Prince George's County Department of Social Services who screens and refers families for housing assistance when the family is in danger of their children being placed in foster care.

The Moderate Rehabilitation Program - In exchange for low-interest loans, owners of multi-family housing sites agree to allocate a fixed number of units to families who qualify for rental assistance.

Rental Allowance Program - A state-funded housing program that provides fixed monthly rental assistance payments to eligible lower- income homeless persons and to households with critical emergency housing needs.

Veterans Assistance Program - Is a local housing initiative established to provide permanent housing to homeless veterans in Prince George's County.

To learn more about the above programs, visit the Housing Authority's website.

Big Shout to Some of My Supporter During Covid-19 Crisis

This morning, I just have to shout out to a few people who have been standing with me during this Convi-19 crisis. They have stepped up their support with food, water, visits, transportation, medical services, and help for our seniors.

Chief Anthony Morgan and the Mount Rainier Police Department
Caroly Samuel King
William "Lee" Miles
Patricia Page
Wanda Wheatley
Diane Dunsmore
Ernest Wheeler
Robin Bliss
Jack Priestley and the CERT Team
Dr. George Askew
Ms. Gloria Brown

These are the times when THANK YOU just does not seem adequate, but it is all I can offer. Each of you ROCK in my book, and I know those that you helped and are helping are forever grateful!

The CERT Team is still accepting food.

Lisa Lincoln and her team at CAFE are setting up a food pantry in the Queen Manor Apartments area. Here is what Lisa had to say:

CAFE is working to set up a food pantry for those in need. We had hoped to have it outside so people could visit it 24/7, but understand insurance concerns. So, we will be at the door pantry (not letting anyone in, but they can see inside and make requests) located at CAFE in Queens Manor. We see this as a partnership: people in need from this community could come to CAFE between 5 and 6:30pm on Mondays and Fridays. IF we ever have unserved meals, we can donate to CERT. IF CERT has extra donations, we can add them to our pantry.
I will be posting more information as it becomes available. THANK YOU, Lisa and the team.

Thank you Mount Rainier RESIDENTS!

Closer to home. Mayor and Council hosted a hearing in the community room at the Mount Rainier Police Department to a standing-room crowd of residents, business owners, and customers opposing or supporting the renewal of Chuck's Liquor License.
Regardless of which side you are on, I take my hat off to all of you for the decorum, civility, and passion you brought to the hearing.
Like many of you, I dreaded to think how the hearing would go, and really wished I could just stay home and hope that this would pass. I am so glad to once again state how proud I am to live in the great City of Mount Rainier. You truly represented the meaning of democracy, and each one of you articulated your position on the issue with respect for the other side. THANK YOU.
The next step in the process is to prepare to present your cases to the Prince George's Liquor Board, and no matter how they rule, I am hopeful that we will come back to Mount Rainier and continue to work to make this City the great City that I have come to call home.
The Liquor Board will hold its hearing on April 1, 2020, at 7:00 p.m.

One Experience of Living in Mount Rainier 2019

Living in Mount Rainier is an awesome experience! I have neighbors to ride by daily to check on me and what is happening on my property. I always feel safe because I know they will have their cameras out, taking pictures of any perceived indiscretion on my property.
For this morning picture takers, here is the latest scoop. On behalf of the City of Mount Rainier, after the City Council meeting, I attended the Gateway CDC Gala in Greenbelt. I returned home around 1:00 a.m. ALL of the parking spaces on my street where I pay my mortgage and property taxes were gone.
I circled the block, and there were no other parking spaces at a reasonable distance from my home. So, I parked in my yard where there was plenty of space available. Oh, by the way, I moved my RV that a least one resident has a problem with me owning and having in my yard (based on the numerous complaints that she has filed) so that work could be done by the workers. I guess I should have parked it on the street and took up about two and a half parking spaces. Maybe that is what I will do in the future.
Thank you for keeping me safe in my home, and I hope that you will continue to keep a watchful eye on me and my property. You have been doing an excellent job for the past ten years, and I hope that you will continue. Your pictures and notifications to code enforcement and the Mount Rainier Police Department ensure my safety.
By the way, there are other cars in the City parked on the grass regularly in their yards. Maybe you should broaden your scope! And, please note that a few other residents have purchased RVs and are parking them in their yards. Thanks again for your watchful eye.
Am I safe or am I being STALKED?

The Miles Family Thanksgiving Dinner 2019

I have not caught up with me yet, but I wanted to post this picture of the Miles family on Thanksgiving Day. We celebrated Thanksgiving (Wednesday-Friday) at the Residence Inn in Greenbelt, MD. It was an awesome gathering and I wish to give all kinds of shout outs to my awesome family members whom I love dearly!
THANK YOU NOW AND ALWAYS!
Yes, we had more than enough food, and we had some for leftovers the next day.
Thank you God for loving the Miles family and always keeping us and meeting our needs. We may be cash poor, but we got each other and that makes US RICH!
Thank you, Patricia Fenn for the wonderful shrimp and cocktail sauce.

More than 27 of us got together for Thanksgiving Day. This picture I only represents a few of us. Hopefully the rest of them will share some pictures with me, and then I can capture the history of the day.
