Prince George's Reopens County Cooling Centers Today,

 Monday, July 2, 2012

Hyattsville, MD - The Prince George's County Office of Emergency Management will resume operations of its cooling centers on Monday, July 2nd.  These cooling centers will compliment the 24-hour cooling centers that the County announced yesterday.

Below is a list of cooling centers and shelters available to residents today!  Please note hours of operation.  Many of the cooling centers are Park & Recreation Community Centers serving in dual capacities for camp and other daily activities.

Residents who require overnight accommodations are encouraged to go to the shelter at Northwestern High School, 7000 Adelphi Road, Hyattsville, MD.  In addition, residents who are in need of recharging their medical oxygen devices should go to one of the cooling centers, fire stations or the Northwestern High School shelter to charge their equipment. 

The Prince George's County Fire Department reminds citizens to use battery operated lights and flash lights in lieu of candles.  A couple of post-storm fires that occurred were the result of residents using candles for light. In order to conserve cool air, residents are encouraged to use discretion in opening windows in order to keep cooler air inside as well as minimizing the time refrigerators and freezers are opened.  

The Prince George's County Department of Family Services has been regularly communicating with all senior citizen, assisted living centers, and nursing homes in the County. Residents are encouraged to check on the elderly, neighbors, family members and those who may have special needs.

My Granddaughter is in NEED of MAJOR surgery to LIVE!

Dear Friends and Family:

Did you know that children born with Esophageal Atresia (EA) with or without a Tracheoesophageal Fistula (TEF) are unlikely to survive without surgery to reconnect the esophagus?  And, these children are likely to have Respiratory and Gastrointestinal (GI) complications which may continue throughout their lifetime?  Well, this is what my family was faced with when our daughter, Eryn, was diagnosed with this birth defect 4 years ago. 

To compound the matter, children with Esophageal Atresia often have associated complications which may include Tracheomalacia, GERD, Esophageal Strictures, and even a recurrence of aTracheoesophageal Fistula.  Sometimes these complications cause the child to have a “Smoker’s Cough,” dysphasia, and frequent and reoccurring pneumonia.

Baby Sister’s Song: EA/TEF Awareness was birthed out of my family’s plea for medical help for our daughter.  We had exhausted all local options, and yet, our daughter continues to suffer with chronic aspiration pneumonia and GERD.  After much research, we discovered that Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center had a reputation for finding solutions to the most difficult esophageal disorders… Exactly what Eryn needs. 

On Sunday, July 29, 2012, I am hosting and participating in Baby Sister’s Song: EA/TEF Walk-A-Thon.   Our goal is to find answers and heighten awareness about EA/TEF, and ultimately raise funds so Eryn can get to Cincinnati Children’s for evaluation and treatment.

UPDATE from PEPCO

·        Much of the work completed thus far by PEPCO was on the backbone of the system --  the subtransmission and substation supply feeders. That work occurs largely out of the public view on company-owned rights of way, not on the local streets and in neighborhoods. Restoring substations and supply feeders sets the stage for the more visible work (and higher-numbered outage reductions) that occur when the crews are able to turn to the job of fixing distribution feeders which are those supplying power to residences and businesses.  

·        Now that we’ve gotten major backbone work done, customers should see more crews on the street in the next few days.

·        We will work around the clock until restoration is completed. Restoration may take as long as a week until essentially all customers are restored.

·        Our focus is on restoring service as quickly and safely as possible, starting with major electrical equipment and critical facilities

·        We are continuing to seek outside crew reinforcements to aid in the restoration effort.  This has been made difficult because of the number of utilities that are requesting assistance from other crews.

·        Crews are working around the clock to restore power even though customers may not always see Pepco trucks. Crews may be working on circuits and substations that supply the power to a customer’s residence or business, but that are not in visual range.
 
·        As supported by the local Emergency Management Agencies in DC, Montgomery County, and Prince George's County, Pepco encourages the use of malls for customers to get out of the heat while power continues to be restored.


How We Restore Power
1.        Our damage assessment and restoration process begins as soon as storm conditions allow for our personnel to proceed safely with gathering information and determining the extent of the damage.
2.        It is important to undertake restoration work in a sequence that restores the largest number of customers first.  We also give priority to hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities with special public needs.
3.        Our priorities include the following:
i.        Downed live wires or potentially life-threatening situations
ii.        High priority customers such as public health and safety facilities
iii.        Transmission lines serving thousands of customers
iv.        Substation equipment
v.        Main distribution lines serving large numbers of customers
vi.        Secondary lines serving neighborhoods
4.        Pepco cannot provide restoration priority to individual customers when there are extensive power outages. [Refer to Emergency Medical Equipment Notification Program.] If customers or their family members need life-support equipment that requires electricity to operate, they should go to an alternate location with power.
5.        Though we are sensitive to the challenges associated with a loss of power, the designation of a particular outage as an ‘emergency’ is limited to those circumstances that present life threatening conditions such as downed live wires.

Power has been restored to almost all pumping stations and the distribution system has returned to near normal levels following a powerful storm Friday night. If you did not experience low pressure and/or discolored water during the restrictions, there is no need to flush the water lines at your home or business. Resume water usage as normal. If you did experience low pressure and/or discolored water WSSC recommends you: Flush the cold water lines in your home or business for five minutes. If you have a single-lever faucet, set it to run the cold water. Flush your refrigerator’s water lines for five minutes. Consult your owner’s manual for detailed instructions. Make sure the water in your washing machine is running clear before you wash clothes. Doing laundry with discolored water can stain clothes. If you still experience problems after flushing your cold water lines, or if you have any questions, please contact our Customer Emergency Call Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week at: (301) 206-4002, 1-800-828-6439 or TTY (301)-206-8345. Animal Shelter Without Power

Hyattsville, MD - The Prince George's County Office of Emergency Management has opened three 24-hour cooling centers in the County that residents can use to find refuge from the heat.   The centers are located in the north, central and south sections of the County.

The County Animal Shelter is now without power.  Residents who have pets that need shelter should call 301-780-7200.

LAUREL - June 30, 2012: The mandatory water restrictions put in place early this morning will remain in effect at least overnight for all Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) customers, residential and commercial in Montgomery and Prince George's counties.

Power has been restored to WSSC's water filtration plants, but we still face challenges in moving water through the distribution system because some pumping stations remain without power.
We are making progress, but need additional time to top off our system as we likely will face another very hot day and increased demand as more people regain their power.  We also want sufficient reserves to maintain pressure at the fire hydrants for firefighters.
WSSC's water is safe to drink, however it is imperative all customers follow the mandatory water restrictions as we work to refill our distribution system. Some customers are experiencing discolored water. This is common after a powerful storm. Sediment inside the pipes can be stirred up causing the water to become discolored. While this water is safe to drink, WSSC does not recommend using discolored water to prepare baby formula. Washing machines should be used sparingly during mandatory water restrictions and WSSC does not recommend washing clothes with discolored water.
Until the distribution system has refilled, it is imperative that all business and residential customers restrict their water use.

Customers need to:

·        Stop all outside water use - no watering lawns, shrubs, flowers; no washing cars, no topping off swimming pools

·        Use water only as necessary - i.e., shorter showers and turn off faucets after washing hands

·        Limit flushing toilets (do not flush after every use)

·        Postpone using washing machines and dishwashers

These mandatory water restrictions apply to all WSSC customers, commercial and residential, in Prince George's and Montgomery counties.
WSSC will provide updates through the local media and throughwww.wsscwater.com until mandatory restrictions are no longer necessary.

We understand the water restrictions are an inconvenience for our customers during this extremely hot weather. We appreciate your patience and cooperation. 

 

POWER OUTAGE TIPS FROM THE GOVERNOR:

Dear Friend,    We hope you and your family are safe after last night's violent storms. As a State, we continue to work with our local partners to assess the situation and will send out updates as we have them.

With temperatures expected to reach over 100 degrees today in parts of Maryland and more storms anticipated later today, we wanted to share a few safety tips with you and encourage those of you with power to open up  your homes to friends and family who have lost power.

• Drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic beverages
• If you are without power, visit a friend or family's house with air conditioning 
• If you are without power, visit a library, mall or other public location with air conditioning
• If you are without power, visit a local cooling center
• Stay away from downed wires
• NEVER operate a generator indoors
• Avoid the use of candles---use flashlights instead
• When a traffic light is out, treat it as a 4-way stop
• If your power is out, keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed to avoid food spoilage.

We are all in this together. Please check on your family and friends--especially the elderly--and invite them over if you have air conditioning.
