Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) Begins Water Restrictions in Southern Prince Georges County

Landover Hills, MD: This evening beginning at 9:00 p.m., the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) began a mandatory water restriction to areas of Southern Prince Georges County that are impacted by a 54-inch concrete pipeline that appears to be failing.  Under the mandatory water restriction residents are advised to utilize water only when necessary such as short showers, turning off faucets after washing hands, limit flushing toilets, and postponing using washing machines and dishwashers.  According to WSSC, eventually the impacted area will run out of water and residents need to utilize bottled and/or previously stored water.   Additionally, Prince Georges County has announced a Local Declaration of Emergency due to this crisis.
Some of the communities likely to be affected include Morningside, Hillcrest Heights, Camp Springs, Forest Heights, Temple Hills, and Oxon Hill, including Joint Base Andrews and the National Harbor.  Please check this interactive map<http://gisweb.wsscwater.com/waterrestrictions/> to see if you are in the affected area.  Residents may be without water for several days while repairs are made.  Prince Georges County Office of Emergency Management opened the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 11:00 p.m. yesterday evening to monitor the situation and begin preparation for the water shortage.  Earlier this afternoon, Prince Georges County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, Council Members Obie Patterson (D-District 8), Council Member Karen Toles, (D-District 7) Prince Georges County Office of Emergency Management conducted a press conference regarding the water shortage and announced that the County will be opening reception centers, where residents will be able to use shower facilities as well as cooling centers, and a shelter.

Residents with any questions are encouraged to call WSSCs 24-hour Call Center at 301-206-4002.   Prince Georges Countys 3-1-1 Call Center is extending its hours during this crisis and will be open from 7:00 a.m.- 9:00 p.m. Residents should NOT call 9-1-1, unless it is a medical emergency.

Residents in the impacted areas are encouraged to heed the following tips;

         Store 1-2 gallons of safe water per person per day.

         Safe is tap water stored in airtight, clean, food-grade plastic containers or store bought bottled water.

         Store 1-2 gallons of purchased distilled water for any individuals with chronic health problems including weakened immune systems.

         Do not store drinking water in glass or used milk containers.

         Remember to store water for your pets to drink.

         Use water in your hot-water tank and ice cubes.

         Water stored in a bath tub or swimming pool can be used to flush toilets.

         Remember most people in the area are NOT affected.  So contact relatives and friends and ask for their assistance if needed.

WSSC is providing water to residents in the affected areas and the County has set-up three distribution points in the affected areas.  Residents will be limited to 2 gallons per person.
The distribution points will open from 12:00 noon  -  9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17 and from 8:00 a.m.9:00 p.m. until the water outage is over.  Residents must bring their own containers.
