The Front Porch Ministries (TFPM) NEED more DONORS

What is on my mind today is the same thing that was on my mind yesterday -- food acquisition and distribution.

The Front Porch Ministries (TFPM) was started as a food distribution service for residents of Mount Rainier and has grown a following and favor across the County and the State of Maryland.

In some ways, that is great and is definitely way beyond my wildest dreams, but The Front Porch Ministries' notoriety has become troublesome in some ways.

What was intended for Mount Rainier residents is serving a much broader population, and, in fact, some Mount Rainier residents are missing out.

We at The Front Porch Ministries usually do not ask where participants come from, but there were so many new, unfamiliar faces yesterday we asked.

Participants came from the District of Columbia, Hyattsville, Cottage City, Colmar Manor, Brentwood, North Brentwood, Riverdale, New Carrollton, and Bladensburg, to name a few of the newcomers.

And, yes, the food ran much quicker, and many Mount Rainier residents, who are used to coming after work or late, came, and the food was gone. In addition, the newcomers s were uncomfortable after being told that The Front Porch Ministries' food distribution was primarily for Mount Rainier residents.

No one was turned away, but it made me start thinking again, how do I ensure that Mount Rainier residents reap the benefits of my labors. NOTE: The District of Columbia has more programs than Prince George's County and the State of Maryland, and Hyattsville has at least three (3) churches that give out food weekly.

No one took more than their needs, but TFPM did not have an overabundance to accommodate the increased number of participants.

Needless to say, this has kept me up most of the night, and I still do not have a solution.

People need food, food prices are steadily creeping up as we are told how strong the economic market is, and our neighbors are going to bed with no food to put on their tables.

As many of the volunteers can attest, I frequently threaten to close The Front Porch Ministries because there are so many other food sources out there. Then we have a yesterday where we run out of food, and people leave empty-handed, or we get a call from a neighbor who is desperate for food, and we are able to provide enough food to feed them for a week, even on off days.

Many of us in Mount Rainier are doing well financially, but some of us are one paycheck away from losing our homes, let alone being able to buy food, and there just aren't enough resources out there to go around.

Getting off my soapbox, but still thinking about how to make sure Mount Rainier residents have food on their tables. No, our children should not go to bed hungry -- not in Mount Rainier. So, The Front Porch Ministries will remain open as long as we can get food donations and can give our food away for FREE!

ON A DIFFERENT NOTE:

Thank you to all of the residents who have been keeping The Front Porch Ministries supplied with bags.

Thank you, Chris Lowe, for continuously coming by at night to check on The Front Porch Ministries and to put out the boxes and other residuals from The Front Porch Ministries.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who show up rain, sleet, snow, and hot weather, and all to make the food distribution possible.

Thank you to the donors that are still making it possible for The Front Porch Ministries to remain open and provide food to Mount Rainier residents.

Thank you, thank you to all of the participants for showing up and picking up the food.

Because of all of you, The Front Porch Ministries continues to be a valuable resource to the residents of Mount Rainier and other communities.

FIREWORKS -- FIREWORKS -- Going on for hours in my neighborhood.

The air quality is awful because of all of the illegal fireworks in Mount Rainier. You can smell the residue, smokes, and chemicals all over the house, even with all three air purifiers going. Of course, there are no police or anyone to stop them from setting them off. Wearing my mask inside!

Folks, it is time to let the fireworks go. Some of us are NOT enjoying the noise or the smoke/residue left behind. Thank you.

In Maryland, most fireworks — including bottle rockets, firecrackers, Roman candles, fire balloons, and signal lights — are illegal.

Fight the BITE this Summer!!

Ticks and mosquitoes can be more than just a nuisance. They can spread germs that make you sick. Fight the bite by taking steps to prevent tick- and mosquito-borne disease.

Ticks and mosquitoes can be more than just a nuisance. They can spread germs that make you sick. Fight the bite by taking steps to prevent tick- and mosquito-borne disease.

Vector-borne diseases are on the rise in the United States. Mosquitoes and tick bites can spread viruses, bacteria, and parasites that cause several different diseases. Some of the most common vector-borne diseases in the U.S. include:

Lyme disease
West Nile virus disease
Anaplasmosis

Mosquito and tick bites can happen anywhere, even in your own backyard. Certain groups of people are at a higher risk for disease than others due to behaviors or geographic location that put them in contact with ticks and mosquitoes. Additionally, certain groups of people are more likely to develop severe disease, such as older adults and those who have weakened immune systems. Understanding your risk of vector-borne diseases can help you know when and where to expect ticks and mosquitoes.

FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, we put our children at RISK!

BAD LAW! Just because everyone is doing it, it does not make it right or feasible. "For a Few Dollars More!"

As Maryland joins the District of Columbia and other states in their chase for the almighty dollar, do not be surprised when there is an increase in the number of our children who die from overdosing, violent behavior, and other unexpected activity.

Children, by their very nature, are inquisitive and will experiment as well as flirt with danger. I did, and if you are honest, you did too -- drove too fast with your new license, picked up friends for a joy ride, and yes, took a trip out of the City without your parents knowing. Harmless in hindsight NOW, but we did it.

Fast forward to today -- legalized marijuana laced with Fentanyl and driving a car with that learner's permit with friends in the car. Okay, I get it! Marijuana will only be sold to folks twenty-one (21) or older. REALLY! Who purchased your first pack of cigarettes, can or bottle of beer, or bottle of liquor?

I personally believe that Maryland and its legislators have opened the doors to disaster, and in the not-so-distant future, we, the people, will reap the whirlwind -- all for a few dollars more.

I have heard it before and am prepared to hear it again, "I am out of step with the times!" So be it. I'd rather be out of step with the times and fighting the plague of drugs than bury more young children.

No matter how well you think you are raising your children, they are still children and should be able to get guidance from parents, adults, legislators, teachers, educators, and others, and that guidance should come from example, not do as I say do!

Parents, a plague is coming for your children, and it will not be fun to watch.

When common sense has left the building, WHAT IS LEFT BEHIND?

NOTE: Lord, please build a shield around me and mine. Poor your cleansing blood all over each and every one of us and protect us from this plague that is coming upon us. I know you can do it, I expect you to do it, and I claim your protection now and in the future.

Blog Updated -- YEP, I have a blog for years.

With all the work I have to do, should be doing, need to do, I am working on this blog.  Not a lot was

done, but after almost fifteen (15 years, I changed the background and the wording, and I still need to do more work, but at least that has been done.

I also wanted to add a few pictures -- not sure why, but I did it anyway.

YOUR CIVIC DUTRY --

DID YOU VOTE in YOUR MUNICIPAL ELECTION ON MONDAY?

You should not complain about things when you do not exercise your rights. Your refusal to help find solutions is on you!

Voting is only one way to help find solutions to problems.

Getting involved in your community is an extension of voting.

Staying in touch with your elected official and ensuring they represent you is the ultimate goal of representation and voting. It's called accountability.

Currently, accountability of elected officials appears to be practiced ONLY by the rich. Everyone else seems to vote, go back to business as usual, continue to complain, and blame others for conditions in their neighborhoods.

Democracy is not having the right to participate in the decision-making process but exercising those rights and being a part of the solution.

Doing nothing or just complaining will not solve the problem.

When was the last time you contacted, met with, or got involved with your elected officials (municipal, county, state, federal, or HOA, if you have one).

A word to the wise should be sufficient.

Eighteen Years Later

Today has come and gone, but not without its rewards, a major scare, and high time with my daughter, Nneka Barnes, a scolding from my granddaughter, Lat Rice, and a visit from three other grandchildren. Feeling the love.

Thank you, Nneka Barnes, for being there with me in 2005 when I was one of three (3) to be the first awarded the William Jefferson Jackson Honors Award! And, yes, thank you for being there with me eighteen (18) years later to see the inductees for this year and the past eighteen (18) years! YOU ROCK!

NO MORE FOOD DESERTS in the INNER BELTWAY!

What is being heard at The Front Porch Ministries! No, it is not gossip. It is TRUTH!

When I moved to Mount Rainier, there were quality food stores (Giant Foods, Safeway, and A&P) within walking distance of several communities. All those stores are gone today, and new stores with reasonable prices and relatively good quality moved in but are also now gone. If residents have cars or money for transportation, they can get to other stores with good quality food and pay less. But, if they do not have these resources, they are doomed to less-than-quality food at higher prices.

The stores that replaced those "good" quality food stores that served the entire neighborhood were often replaced with food stores of inferior quality.

My community has lost all of its major food stores! Why? Because the good quality stores have moved out to move affluent neighborhoods while no one was watching. YEP, COVID is to blame for that, too, right? NOT!

Also, lawmakers and those elected to serve and protect all are cutting deals and ensuring that THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS remain intact and that they receive the BEST of everything.

Neighbors, residents, families, and friends, WE MUST UNITE and DEMAND that our community no longer be declared a "food desert and that QUALITY FOOD STORES be brought back to our walking communities.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE for our area to once again be deprived of the growth and development that is occurring in our county -- "one of the richest Black counties in America!'

Our populations are counted when grants and funding requests are submitted to county, state, and federal government for funding, yet we are NOT GETTING OUR FAIR SHARE WITHIN THE BELTWAY!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Join me in taking on this issue. Let's fight for what is rightfully OURS -- quality food within walking distance of our homes. Municipalities WANT to be at the table when these big decisions are being made!
