WEATHER ALERT! MOUNT RAINIER RESIDENTS

In preparation for Tropical Storm Isaias, ALL CITY STAFF with the exception of Public Works and Police Officers will telework on Tuesday, August 4th. City Buildings will be CLOSED tomorrow.

This evening, Prince George's County held a conference call for Municipalities. On this call, a representative from the National Weather Service indicated that Prince George's County is in the direct path of Tropical Storm Isaias.

We are expected to have flooding, high winds, and wind damage. Isaias is being compared to Irene (hurricane from nine years ago).

With that being said as a safety precaution we will telework and only have essential employees report.

If your electric power is interrupted, be sure to report the outage to PEPCO right away. You may also Check My Outage Status or View Outage Map. You can​ report your electric outage online, including on your smartphone or tablet. If you prefer, call us 24/7 at 1-877-737-2662.

If power lines are down, always assume downed power lines are energized and stay away. To report a downed wire, call 1-877-737-2662.

If at all possible do not use candles.

If you encounter high water or standing water -- TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN!

Please stay safe, charge all electronics, and prepare.

Wyland Foundation along with several other partners will award prizes and other incentives to participants.

WSSC as Mount Rainier's partner will also be awarding prizes and incentives. WSSC will also provide ZOOM meetings and workshops on water conservation throughout the month of August.

Mayors Have the Right to ACT on Behalf of THEIR RESIDENTS

Keisha Lance Bottoms, Mayor of Atlanta, a member of DeltaSigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a Black woman, and a mayor is currently being sued by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to pre-empt her city-wide mandate on wearing masks. This past Thursday, the Governor filed an injunction motion to prevent Mayor Bottoms from speaking to the press regarding this matter.

I am asking the Maryland Mayors to stand with Mayor Bottoms and support her as she defends these legal maneuvering.

Let's make this social media campaign: “I oppose Governor Kemp’s lawsuit and motion to silence Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms from keeping the people of Atlanta safe. We call upon Fulton County Superior Court to decide that Mayor Bottoms is being singled out amongst other mayors in Georgia with similar mandates and deny the Governor’s request.” Governor Kemp, Fulton County Superior Court and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms all have social media pages on FB, IG, and Twitter. We ask that you tag all three when posting.

Executive Director Opening, Part-time, Maryland Black Mayors, Inc.

Maryland Black Mayors, Inc. is seeking a relatively experienced part-time executive director to lead our organization through an upcoming period of growth. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of our organization, ensuring that we are operating efficiently and effectively to meet business goals. In this role, you will be the face of our organization.

You will work closely with the Board of Directors, government officials, nonprofits, corporations, and the public. You will ensure that the organization’s mission, vision, and objectives are carried out, and that we are working together we successfully achieve strategic goals. Our organization is small, and represent mostly mayors in Prince George’s County, but also a few mayors across the State of Maryland. We place a high priority on communication, recognition, and collaboration.

We are in search of an executive director who is aligned with our culture and will continue to enhance it through positive leadership.

The position requires a go-getter, self-starter, and a quick study, with exceptional communication skills, and the ability to get things done.

The position will require attendance at meetings, some travel, and a lot of learning on the job to meet assigned objectives.

Hours of work: Self-determined but would be expected to work at least 10 hours a month or as necessary to get the basic functions of the job completed.

Salary determination will be made upon the job offer.

Distance Learning for Prince George's County Students

I have always supported the idea of year-round learning in our schools.  Check out this post.

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) Virtual Summer Learning Programs offer students opportunities to help transition to high school, take part in academic enrichment, earn original credits towards graduation requirements and recover credits for required courses. 

Elementary Programs
Students in prekindergarten through fifth grade can continue distance learning via PGCPS-TV on channels 38 (Verizon) and 96 (Comcast). No registration required and the program is free.

Middle School Programs
Middle school students can access the Edgenuity MYPath summer learning program to build skills in reading and math. No registration required and the program is free. Students can take the self-paced classes from July 1 through July 31. Login at learn.edgenuity.com using the following credentials: 

USERNAME: pgmsYOUR STUDENT ID
PASSWORD: YOUR STUDENT ID

Students who did not pass two quarters of reading or math are eligible to participate in a special skills-building program. Classes are free and online enrollment has been extended to June 26.

High School Programs
High school students can earn an original credit and/or recover failed credits towards fulfilling graduation requirements. Students will receive instructional support from a certified content area teacher. Classes are free and offered from July 1 through July 31.

Special Education Program
The summer Extended School Year (ESY) Program is an extension of services beyond the regular school year. Eligible students were identified for the program through an annual review process. 

Other Programs
Many schools are offering summer programs for targeted groups of students, including a P-TECH Virtual Summer Bridge program, First Steps to Success Program, College Readiness Bootcamp, IB Summer Bridge, 3D Scholars, Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Technology, and CTE Summer Explorers Camp.
