Emergency Preparedness Training -- FREE -- Join Mount Rainier's Emergency Preparedness Team

Mount Rainier’s Emergency Preparedness Committee is off to a good start.  On January 24, 2017, the Committee met with County representative and took a tour of the County’s Emergency Preparedness facility.

As part of the Committee’s Preparedness, the following training has been scheduled and will be held over the next several months.

If you are interested in joining the emergency preparedness Committee, NOW is a great time to join.    

The next Committee meeting will be held on February 28, 2017, at the Mount Rainier Police Department at 7:00 pm.

The Committee is looking for an additional TEN MEMBERS to participate in the CPR, AED, Safety Training scheduled for March 11, 2017 (date may change).

There will be a TWO-DAY CERT training on April 1 and 2. 

The Mount Rainier Emergency Preparedness Committee will visit the Emergency Management Institute of the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) serves as the national focal point for the development and delivery of emergency management training. In Emmetsburg, MD 21727 on May 12.

Save Regional Medical Center and Cardiac Care for our County

Citizen Action Needed to Save Regional Medical Center and Cardiac Care for our County (read below, share with neighbors, act fast) State Finally Approves Prince George's County Regional Medical Center The Maryland Heath Care Cost Commission (MHCC) recently approved the Certificate of Need (CON) for Prince George’s Regional Medical Center and ambulatory care center.  The intent is to ensure our Prince George’s County residents will have access to a new state of the art 205 bed acute care, teaching and research facility designed to be a regional place for health care excellence.  The Prince George’s Regional Medical Center (PGRMC) will be connected to a health system that will bring quality access to needed primary care and improve the health status of Prince George’s County residents.  The Prince George’s Medical System in preparing for the new Regional Medical Center and to meet the outstanding cardiac needs of our Prince George’s residents revitalized its cardiac surgery program. Our Prince George’s cardiac program has the highest quality ratings and is growing every day.  The cardiac program is a key component to the success of the new Regional Medical Center.  Alert- State Health Care Commission is Taking Action to Threaten the Viability of the New Regional Medical Center and Cardiac Care The MHCC in an unfair and discriminatory manner approved the development of a competing cardiac surgery program for Anne Arundel County (AAC).  The MHCC ignored its own regulatory guidelines and gave no regard to the data that clearly indicates the approval for the AAC site will jeopardize the viability of the new PGRMC  they just approved and will certainly threaten the success of the Prince George’s Medical System Cardiac Care Program. The MHCC is unfairly allowing Anne Arundel County to pull cardiac patients from Prince George’s before the new Regional Center can be completed and result in lowering the volume of cardiac cases seen in Prince George’s, thereby ensuring a weakened and threatened Prince George’s Cardiac Care Program. MHCC Commissioner applied standards of review different than were applied to Prince George’s, ignored information, never required adequate responses from AAC, never required proof (as it did to PGRMC) that AAC cardiac program would be financially feasible, and in an overt discriminatory manner and appear to decide that AAC was wealthy enough to absorb losses. Act fast- activate neighbors- don’t let our County voices go unheard! These are REAL HEADLINES!  YOU may help to save a life by volunteering this Sunday, January 15, 2017 to help distribute and install SMOKE and FIRE DETECTORS

The biggest disaster threats to American families aren’t floods, hurricanes or tornadoes – home fires are. 

The American Red Cross responds to a disaster every eight minutes and nearly all of these are home fires. A home fire can strike anywhere, anytime, devastating families. But together, we are changing that. Working with fire departments and other partners, we are visiting homes to install free 10-year smoke alarms and replace smoke alarm batteries.

Volunteers may serve as a smoke alarm installer, educator or documenter for this event. No experience needed; training will be provided at the event as well as a light breakfast and snacks. Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to participate.

Below are details on a local rally to save the Affordable Care Act.  Senator Van Hollen's office has reached out to Howard County to recruit volunteers to help out at the event.  If you are interested in helping on Sunday, January 15 please let me know. You can respond to me by email.

I am the volunteer leader on this event.  We have very few volunteers and 1200 attending so we need help. If you are attending the event, please consider helping us.  It will not be difficult – might involve arriving a little earlier (PERK!!! skirting any lines, of course!!!) but you will still see the event.  Sen.Van Hollen and other electeds will attend.

I don’t have specific instructions yet but send me your response and I will get them to you once Yvette Lewis sends them to me.  These rallies being held nationwide on Sunday are right now one of the key things we can do to show support for not repealing the ACA and not making changes to Medicaid and Medicare. This is to try and prevent 20 million people from losing their insurance and countless others from losing benefits most may not even be aware are coming from the ACA (Obamacare).

The Resilience Ball at Joe's Movement Emporium

One of Mount Rainier's most active Activist is spearheading a response to the inaugural celebrations.  It is not a resistance movement, but an acknowledgment of the resilience of the American people and specifically the wonderful people of Mount Rainier, MD.

I wanted to share with the city that citizens have organized a major event On Friday, January 20th from 6 - 11pm.  The Resilience Ball: A Celebration of Community Strength and Hope will feature a number of activities and performances.  The mayor will be speaking that night to highlight municipal governance as the place where democracy truly comes to life.  I am expecting 200-300 people.

G9 -- An express bus from Mount Rainier to downtown starts picking up passengers in March

Last May, the DC Council approved funding for the G9, an express bus line along the Rhode Island Avenue corridor. According to a WMATA spokesperson, the line, which will run from Mount Rainier in Prince George's County to downtown DC, will begin service on March 20th. 

Earlier this week, DC Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie's office handed out flyers and posted on his Facebook page to let people know about the G9 running "through the heart of Ward 5." More specifically, it will go from just east of Eastern Avenue to Franklin Square. The idea for the new route has been around since at least 2014.

The line will complement the G8 route, running through a rapidly-growing part of the District. WMATA has increased capacity on the G8 in recent years, but rush-hour buses can still be very crowded. The G9 will run every 15 minutes and only during rush hours (from 6 am to 9 am and 3 pm to 7 pm, Monday through Friday). 

Metro points out that service will run both directions during those hours, unlike some other routes that only run one direction during peak hours. The agency is in the process of developing printable timetables and maps.

Electronic Recycling December 17, 2016

The Department of Public Works is hosting an electronic recycling drop-off on Saturday, December 17, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 3715 Wells Ave. This is an opportunity for the community to responsibly dispose of unwanted electronic items for reuse and recycling. Any items with a battery or a plug are acceptable, including televisions, computer equipment, printers, cell phones, extension cords, and holiday lights. Items with refrigerants can not be accepted for electronic recycling.

Donate Christmas Baskets (or whatever you can) for Mount Rainier Residents

THINKING about Christmas Baskets for our families this morning. Here is the meal I am familiar with on Christmas Day:

Traditional Christmas dinner features turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and vegetables such as collard greens, green beans, candied yams, potato salad, boiled corn on the cob, cornbread, roast beef, ham, lots of cakes, pies, and other sweet treats.

Others have carrots, turnip, parsnips, etc. as well as other types of poultry, roast beef, ham, venison, duck, goat, fish are also used.

When you prepare your Christmas Basket this year, think about your traditional Christmas Dinner, and give it to someone else. Make sure you include enough to feed a family of four (4).

Here are some basic items to include:

A meat (poultry, roast beef, ham, venison, duck, goat, fish)

Vegetables (green beans, collard greens, green peas, corn, carrots, turnip, parsnips, asparagus, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, etc.)

Starches (cornbread mix, flour, rice, stuffing mix, pasta including noodles, pie crusts, ready made rolls, etc.)

Desserts (cake mix, pies, cakes, etc.)

Seasonings (salt, pepper, poultry seasonings, sage, celery seeds, mayonnaise, honey, butter or margarine, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, ginger, dry mustard, etc.)

Drinks (tea, coffee, sodas, juice, water, etc.)

CRANBERRY SAUCE or cranberries to make sauce, pineapple, apples, etc.

Not doing a Christmas Basket -- that's okay too. Just select items from the above list and donate them. WE will make sure that the baskets have your items in them.

WHATEVER, you decide to do, will be appreciated by those who will be receiving the Christmas Baskets.

WHEN ARE ITEMS DUE? Nonperishable items may be donated anytime.

Perishable items should be donated the DAY BEFORE, Monday, December 19, the Christmas Baskets are due.

Free Thanksgiving Dinner at 3401 Rhode Island Avenue, in Mount Rainier, MD

 Home alone for Thanksgiving. No family in the area. No home. Feeling lonely and left out of the holiday season.

No problem. The Associated Churches for Community Service (ACCS), the Mount Rainier Police Department, and Mayor Malinda Miles (that's me folks) are preparing Thanksgiving Dinner JUST FOR YOU.

Scott, baked or smoked turkey -- Captain James Stoots, fried turkeys -- Mayor Malinda Miles, homemade cakes (two very large ones) -- Sandra Bramble, fried chicken -- Pastor Dee Pullum, several native Spanish dishes -- Pastor Martinez and his first lady, green beans, cornbread, cranberry sauces, and lots of other foods to delight the palate!

Mount Rainier's Call-A-Bus Available on Election Day

The Mount Rainier Call-A-Bus will again transport residents to the election polls in Mount Rainier on Election Day.

Our driver will be available to drive the Call A Bus from 9:00 am to 5:00pm to take residents to polling places on Election day, Tuesday, November 8th.

Residents who would like to request transportation on this date should call 301-985-6583 to make an appointment in advance.

The Call-A-Bus will also strive to handle many of its regular calls to make sure our seniors can get to their appointments and get out to vote.

The Call-A-Bus will make stops in front of Queenstown Apartment's Rental Office, Rainier Manor, Queens Manor Apartments Rental Office, Kaywood Rental Office, and Newton Square Apartments with stops at Thomas Stone Elementary and Mount Rainier Elementary.

Please circulate to your constituents/residents. On Election Day anyone going to the polls or home from the polls may ride at no cost.

Residents may call for free transportation to the Polling Places on Election Day November 8 2016, from 9:00 am to 5:00pm.  Please call 301-985-6583 to request a ride.  The Call-a-Bus will RUN continuously.  It will stop frequently at Rainier Manor, Queenstown Rental Office, Queens Manor Rental Office, and Kaywood Gardens’ Rental office.   It will also pick up at Newton Apartments and apartments for pick-ups during these times indicated.

Information you can use on Election Day

 Something you need to know if voting At the Polls on Election Day: SOME FIRST-TIME VOTERS IN MARYLAND MAY BE ASKED TO SHOW ID BEFORE VOTING. IF YOU ARE ASKED TO SHOW ID, PLEASE SHOW AN ELECTION JUDGE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING FORMS OF ID: A copy of a current and valid photo ID (i.e., Maryland driver's license, MVA ID card, student, employee, or military ID card, U.S. passport, or any other State or federal government-issued ID card); OR A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows your name and address. Current means that the document is dated within 3 months of the election.

November 22 - Thanksgiving Baskets donated to families I NEED CAN GOODS, TURKEYS, HAMS, CHICKENS, and all the trimmings for Thanksgiving dinner for our families in need.

December20 --Christmas Baskets donated to families I NEED CAN GOODS, TURKEYS, HAMS, CHICKENS, and all the trimmings for Thanksgiving dinner for our families in need.

Mount Rainier a community that believes in helping each other to survive. Please help make this coming holiday season special for our neighbors and seniors.

You may drop off can goods, nonperishables to Mount Rainier City Hall and the Mount Rainier Police Station.

LAST YEAR, you helped to provide 155 Thanksgiving Baskets and another 155 Christmas Baskets. WILL YOU HELP TO DO IT AGAIN? The schools are putting their list of families together NOW.
